František Rössler is a Czech author who still needs to be fully appreciated in the Italian concert halls. In the second half of the eighteenth century the composer enjoyed a huge popularity just like Mozart, and Schubert praised him as “one of the most famous composers of our time”. His music was admired for its inventiveness of melody, sophistication and variety.
Rössler is presented alongside another musician who does not need presentation: Dvořák fully lived the season of the Romanticism of music, moving from a juvenile admiration for Wagner to a style more connected to Brahms and the rediscovery of popular traditions.
The texts in programme belong to the period when the author decided to give a new direction to his music: the Romanza marks the beginning of a style less connected to Wagner while the Czech Suite is one of the most Slavic among his works.
Josef Suk was the spiritual heir of Dvořák: he was his pupil at the Conservatory in Prague, and became his son in law after marrying his  daughter Otilka. Meditation proposed in its orchestra adaptation  – after the original performance by Athenäum Quartett for string quartet – during the second world war, became a sort of national manifesto against the German occupation.
