A tribute to Claude Debussy could not be omitted on the centenary of his death. Première Rapsodie belongs to the last creative production of the French composer: composed in 1909 for the Conservatory of Paris, it was originally meant for a clarinet contest and was dedicated to the teacher Prosper Mimart.
Even if this piece is not considered one of Debussy’s masterpieces it still is a prestigious work of the chamber literature for clarinet and piano and it is set apart from the others for its brilliant, changing and unpredictable tone which is one of Debussy’s main characteristic. His style was the reference of the twentieth century and a source of inspiration for many or something to oppose to for others.
During the concert the Rapsody is accompanied by later productions created by the French composer Francis Poulenc – one of the group od Six members – and by the Czech composers Martinů and Janáček. The Sonata of the latter, in its adaptation for clarinet and piano, is the underlying principle of the In duo concert: the original violin and piano version is also proposed.
