The presence of other musical traditions always stimulated the creativity of composers of cultured western music. But not only during the twentieth century there was an encounter between far and distant cultures.
Claude Debussy e Béla Bartók were among the first and most sensitive and open to foreign music suggestions: the former was struck by esotism and went well beyond the ornamental use of western music as his predecessors did, the latter included in his texts elements from the Hungarian country music.
From twentieth century to the years 2000 the intercultural encounter did not lose its allure, on the contrary it grew in popularity among composers of new music in a variety of ways.
A significant example is the work of the Chinese American 2011 Pulitzer prize winner Zhou Long: he flew to the US from Beijing and found a source of inspiration in the firmness of the Chinese working class.
