“The table is already set / go on singing my friends ! / as I am spending my money / I want to have fun “ these are the famous words by Don Giovanni during the scene of his last supper. The setting is in Seville as indicated in the Da Ponte libretto but in reality it refers to the habits of Prague, where this masterpiece premiered in 1787.
It was common practice among the aristocratic bohemian families to have a winds band or a band of livery waiters in their palaces or mansions to brighten their guests at dinner parties with lavish banquets and dances. It could also happen that the “grazioso signore” or nobleman with a passion for music intervened during the concert with his employees. But what were they singing?
This is what the concert by Auser Musici is all about: music by composers nowadays little known in our country but quite famous then. Think of Mysliveček, known in Italy as ‘the divine Bohemian’. Or of František Benda, serving Frederic II of Prussia, who was considered a master of the singing style, a violin virtuoso. And the german Karel Stamic, who moved to Prague in 1787 as a talented violin and villa player: his simphonies set an example even for Haydn and Mozart.
